| Welcome to Speedway Snapshots. This is a collection of my racing photos, mostly from the mid-70's. I would always bring a camera and take a bunch of photos. Most were black and white because I could develop them myself, I couldn't afford much color in those days. Most of these shots I haven't seen in 30 years. Many of them I never printed even way back then. I've been going through envelopes of old negatives, and I decided I'd post them on the web. As I get time I'll add more to the website. Local modified stock car racing was undergoing an amazing transformation between the time I was first exposed to local racing in 1967 through the late seventies. Coupes and coaches were giving way to newer sheet metal. Engine sizes were still unlimited, and fuel injection was allowed. 2 x 4 frames were starting to replace the 55 Chevy based chassis. All kinds of home grown innovation was going on. Some cars had leaf spring suspension, some coils, some trailer bars, bat springs and torsion bars. All kinds of different bodies (made from actual cars!) were in play. For a look back at a time when modifieds ruled (plus some open cockpit stuff too) click on the links below. The site features mostly pictures shot from the spectator areas, in an effort try to convey the experience from the fan's point of view. All pictures are original material and property of Speedway Snapshots. |
