"My way or the highway" philosophy that served them well in some instances but also alienated a lot of people.
For example their policy was that once 3 races were completed it was considiered a complete show and rainchecks
were not honored. The last time I went there they ran a make up street stock feature (won by Carol Whitehouse)
and then the rain started. They proceeded to run off 2 modified heats in a pretty steady rain and
declared it a complete show. I never went back after that.
The track surface was almost always superior (when it wasn't raining). The lighting was awful until around 1990
when some great lights were installed. Around then plans for a sister track were announced, and new
aluminum stands were supposed to be on the way, but the place just sort of withered away.
As I recall the last year of racing was 2000 (I'll have to check that). A new housing developement went up
right next to the speedway and that was that.
I never took many pictures there back in the '70s because of the bad lighting, the fact that the spectators always
had to squint into the setting sun, and by NJ law the stands were set back from the track behind 2 fences.
